Grand Canyon visitors from Las Vegas will be in for a rare treat tomorrow, Friday, May 6. At 9 a.m., Swiss pilot, inventor and aviation enthusiast Yves Rossy will attempt to fly over the Grand Canyon with a jet pack.Rossy is the first person to achieve sustained human flight using a jet-powered fixed wing strapped to his back. This Friday, he plans to jump from a helicopter near Eagle Point and then fly west along the rim of the Grand Canyon, using nothing except his homemade jet-propelled wing suit.
What makes the adventure even more breathtaking is that it is not the first time Rossy has attempted a dangerous stunt with the jet pack. In 2009, he attempted to become the first person to make an intercontinental crossing. Unfortunately, he failed.
However, Rossy has had several successes. He previously flew his custom-made wing suit over the Swiss Alps and across the English Channel. This will be his first jet-pack flight in the United States.
Naturally, Rossy will not be attempting the stunt on the South Rim (government officials typically deny all Grand Canyon stunts). Eagle Point is located in the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. He was, however, able to reach an agreement with the Hualapai tribe to conduct the flight over the more dramatic and beautiful West Rim.
"The Hualapai people have always been more accommodating for adventurers, provided such guests demonstrate a respect for the land," said James Hoke, president of TourGuy.com, LLC. "Eagle Point is such a breathtaking location. While it is anyone's guess what spectators might be able to see, expectations are extremely high that he will be able to give everyone an amazing view of his jet-pack flight before he uses a parachute to drop to the canyon floor. That is a stunt in and of itself."
Six Famous Stunts At The Grand Canyon.
• Evel Knievel. Although Evel Knievel failed in his jump across Idaho's Snake River Canyon in his Skycycle X-2, it was still one of the most anticipated stunts in American history. The jump took place In Idaho after the U.S. Department of the Interior denied him airspace over the Grand Canyon.• Robbie Knievel. Son of the legendary Evel Knievel, Robbie made his jump at Eagle Point in 1999. Unlike his father, he opted to jump a portion of the canyon on a motorcycle. While Robbie lost control of the bike and broke his leg after coming off the landing ramp, it remains one of his most exciting jumps.
• Bob Burnquist. Skater Bob Burnquist rolled down a custom-built mega ramp, grinded down a 40-foot rail and then jumped off into the Grand Canyon. The base jump, which came at the end of his ride, was approximately 1,600 feet from the rim to the floor. Burnquist did not nail the stunt on his first attempt; he nearly lost his life in 2008.
• Dar Robinson. Easily remembered as America's leading professional stuntman, Robinson broke nine world records and set 21 "world's firsts." In the same year he jumped from a cliff into a river for actor Steve McQueen (Papillon, 1971), he also drove over the edge of the Grand Canyon, escaped the vehicle, and parachuted out before hitting the ground.
• Criss Angel. The actor/illusionist attempted what he called a death defying teleportation jump over the Grand Canyon as one of the extraordinary and spectacular illusions he planned to show in his Mindfreak season 6. Unfortunately, the shoddy camera work revealed flaws in the illusion.
Rossy will easily be added to this list once he succeeds this Friday. The only gear will be his 6.5-foot carbon-fiber wing straps, which will be strapped to his back. He has four small jet engines that he controls by shifting his body. Recently, at one aviation show, Rossy did two aerial loops that captivated fans.
While he is always improving the design, Rossy completed his first two successful flights under a wing fitted with two jet engines. It wasn't until 2006 that he added the two additional jets so he could attain better performance and safety. Since then, he has been reducing the size of his design, allowing for more freedom and aerobatics. Grand Canyon West is one of the most popular day-tour destinations from Las Vegas managed by TourGuy.com. Until Rossy proves otherwise, helicopter flights to the Grand Canyon are the only way to fly.
