Horseback Riding Makes For Individual Miracles

Las Vegas horsebackThe verdict might still be out, but the prognosis seems very promising. At least that is how Susan L. Hyman, a University of Rochester pediatrics professor specializing in special needs children, described how therapeutic horseback riding can be.

Her story appeared in the New York Daily News after a Roosevelt Island school for special needs children started petitioning for an equestrian center and riding path on the northern tip of their island.

"We could create a miracle," said Sal Ferrera, the school's executive director. "All the research I've done tells me the equine therapy does wonders for kids that are facing learning challenges."

Ferrera is not alone. Another story about therapeutic riding was recently reported in Denver. The executive director of the nonprofit program, Sandy Winter, relates how a handicapped girl broke down in tears because she was able to ride a horse. She had always dreamed about it, but never thought she would have the experience.

And another interesting story broke in Texas. An anthropology sophomore and Iraq veteran is planning an 8,000-mile journey across the United States. Her name is Jean Stricker and she will begin a 3- to 4-year journey, on horseback, to find herself. She won't be alone. Other veterans will be joining her on this inspired journey.

"There is no doubt in my mind that therapeutic riding is an emerging field," says James Hoke, president of TourGuy.com, LLC. "Horses have been used as a tool for physical therapy, emotional therapy, and general learning for a long time. We've lost some of these benefits as we became overly urbanized."

Hoke, whose company arranges several horseback riding adventures in California, Nevada, and Arizona, says most of his adventures aren't necessarily designed for therapeutic purposes, but that such adventures — especially for first-time riders — are often a life-changing experience for anyone. In most cases, riders must be at least 12 years of age.

"For us, we look at some of these heartwarming stories and really appreciate how fortunate we are to work in this field," said Hoke. "If the horseback riding can benefit people with special needs or help veterans heal, it reinforces how powerful horseback riding is for anyone, regardless of age."

Hoke says there are two associations that have made some marked advancements in this specialized area. The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), which accredits centers providing a variety of beneficial services to people with disabilities; and the Equine Assisted Growth & Learning Association (EAGALA), which focuses more on the mental health side of equine interactions. People searching for special needs opportunities should always ask if the operators are associated.

Grand Canyon horseback"For all other horseback riding enthusiasts, we've done our homework and picked the finest outfitters in the tri-state area," said Hoke. "Last year, we created an eBrochure highlighting all three areas people can visit for Las Vegas horseback riding tours. All of them are different experiences with very different terrain."

There three tours include day trips to Red Rock Canyon, a Great Basin ranch, or a Grand Canyon ranch. Hoke added that most people don't associate Las Vegas with outdoor activities as much as the Las Vegas Strip, but that is changing. People seem to appreciate natural wonders a little more than they used to, he said.

Most excursions offered through TourGuy.com include complimentary pick-up and drop-off service from Strip hotels.
