As impossible as it seems, space tourism might be closer than you think. Yesterday, Boeing announced it would offer passenger seats on commercial flights as early as 2015. The announcement was made in conjunction with an agreement between Boeing and Space Adventures, which is the only company that provides orbital spaceflight opportunities to the world. Clients of Space Adventures have already logged a grand total of 2,000 hours in space.
"We are excited about the potential to offer flights on Boeing's spacecraft," said Eric Anderson, co-founder and chairman of Space Adventures. "With our customer experience and Boeing’s heritage in human spaceflight, our goal is not only to benefit the individuals who fly to space, but also to help make the resources of space available to the commercial sector by bringing the value from space back to Earth."
While no price has been set, Boeing is developing a multiple launch vehicle with as many as seven seats for passengers. Currently, Space Adventures offers several adventures, including suborbital space flights starting at about $102,000 per person (in development) and the ZERO-G Experience, which starts at $4,950 per person (operational).
Another Space Experience, Slightly More Grounded.
TourGuy.com doesn't offer anything as bold (or expensive) as space travel, yet. But there is one tour from Las Vegas that will spark your imagination with tours that take you as close to the famed Area 51 at Groom Lake as possible (without being arrested).
One of the best (non-tour) videos we've seen captures the ominous atmosphere surrounding Area 51. What made the video popular is that two elderly women pass the infamous signs warning people to turn back and the security truck immediately begins pursing them.
In addition to visiting famed landmarks (Black Mailbox, Little A’le’ Inn, Extraterrestrial Highway), the only tour guides authorized to offer the tour have discovered an ancient dry lake bed where unusual Indian petroglyphs can be found. What makes the petroglyphs so unusual is that they resemble aliens.
The allure of Area 51 has never been stronger. Recently, the indie film Dreamland has been making the rounds on the festival circuit. It is scheduled to be shown in Korea next month.
